About Us

Typesetting

Chris Allen began his career as a typesetter in 1997 when he joined Sheffield Academic Press. It was here that he gained a thorough grounding in the world of academic publishing, on many occasions being called upon to subedit the books and journals he was assigned and shaping the material into the required house style prior to the start of the main editorial process. He became a freelancer in 2003, which has led to a broadening of his publishing experience, with new clients and with new technologies. The world of journal publishing in particular has become more focused on electronic distribution, and Chris has kept pace with these developments. He is responsible for the management of Equinox Publishing's online journals and for the distribution of XML metadata to content providers such as Swets and EBSCO. He is currently working to convert the Equinox Publishing back catalogue into e-books.

Iain Beswick joined Sheffield Academic Press in 1995, having spent several years in different employment areas where he learned to use almost every type of computer around at the time (excluding, rather ironically, the Mac). As the Press was based exclusively around Macs at the time, there was a feeling of 'Oh look, another OS to learn—no worries!'.

Owing to his wide experience with different computer systems and interest in how they all worked Iain became the Technical Support/Troubleshooter at the Press as well as the Senior Typesetter (and Font Technology/Character Set 'guru').

He has constantly been looking for new ways to improve the quality and the throughput (typesetting-wise) by trying new computer software and ways of working, a process which is still ongoing.

Audrey Mann was the newest member of the editorial staff at Sheffield Academic Press when it closed and also the oldest! Audrey has a BA and MA in Biblical Studies from the University of Sheffield, gained as a mature student, and subjects studied include Classical and New Testament Greek, biblical Hebrew and Latin. This interest in languages is nothing new as she has ‘A’ levels in French, German and Russian.

Her career in publishing with Sheffield Academic Press is a recent development so therefore quite brief but varied. It includes working on pre-production assessment of manuscripts, indexing, proof reading, project management and copy editing. She is currently registered as a part-time PhD student and is keen to use her skills in helping to maintain accuracy and good style in books, particularly in those of an academic nature.

Audrey is Sheffield based and can be contacted by email at edit-proof@blueyonder.co.uk
